Originally the local school, it has been fully modernised and developed as a versatile venue for a variety of uses. There is good parking around the building and an attractive garden overlooking the church and surrounding fields. The communities of Finsthwaite and Lakeside use the hall for varied community activities, including interest groups, meetings, fairs and sales, celebrations and get-togethers as well as film nights run by Oxen Park Cinema Club. A further attraction of the hall is the easy access to many local attractions including Windermere Lake and the steamers, the Aquarium, Stott Park Bobbin Mill, the Motor Museum, Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway. Currently these include: Our **Book Swap** is held monthly on the **second Wednesday** from 10.15 to 11.45 am, and is an opportunity to meet neighbours, catch up on local news, share refreshments and exchange books. It revolves around the village’s free library consisting of books donated over the years.  Books can be borrowed and returned without any checking system. Fresh donations are always welcome and ensure a constant turnover – and also a regular surplus of books which are sold in aid of St Mary’s Hospice.  It is valued as one of the few regular social gatherings for the local community, albeit at a time of day not convenient for some. Books can of course be borrowed, returned or donated whenever the Village Hall is open and at other times by arrangement. Current organisers are Ro & John Whitley (015395 30183) with much help from others. Additional help is always welcome. **New Ventures** was set up in 2016 in the hope that the residents of Finsthwaite and Lakeside would pool their many **skills, interests and expertise** in order to develop small interest groups that could be self-organising. Early focuses included felting, fly fishing, painting, making cards decorations and moss gardens. Local walks, cider making and cookery demonstrations were also enjoyed. The Afternoon Tea and laughter are key features of the meetings In 2018 the pattern changed to less regular events. There have been fund raisers, for example a Grand Puddings evening to support MND that researches Motor Neurone Disease. Visits to local places of interest such as the Bobbin Mill and Furness Abney were also enjoyed especially as they always concluded with Afternoon Tea in the village hall. The intention is that New Ventures will continue in some form when we emerge from the present constraints . In the pipeline were visits to Rookhow and Windermere steamers. Oxen Park Cinema Club was started in 2003 showing films in local village halls using a large mobile screen, sound equipment and a high-quality projector. This has proved very popular and even though the regular winter season of film-shows now has a permanent home at the The Carthouse Cinema in Oxen Park there is also a special annual film-show and supper in the Village Hall. This hugely popular annual event in October is attractive to locals, the wider community and visitors alike. From a bowl of porridge and a slice of toast, to a full English breakfast accompanied by Buck’s Fizz, all possible breakfast options are catered for – and Sunday papers provided too. The excellent kitchen with separate eating area in the hall makes the hall an versatile venue for a wide variety of events such as the above. Craft Fairs, Christmas Fairs, Garden Sales have all been features of village hall events over the years and in good weather, the yard and garden provide additional space for stalls and activities. Situated next to the hall, the church is an important feature of the village’s community life. *"St Peter’s Church was built in 1874. It was designed by Paley and Austin and won a prize in a competition to design a church suitable for an alpine area and is graded as a 2\* building. It is beautifully decorated inside and well worth looking at. A set of ten tubular bells is housed in the tower and these were restored and electrified in 2011. We believe they are currently the only set of such bells working in the Carlisle Diocese. We are happy to play them when requested and they are very popular at weddings."* The 'Finsthwaite and Lakeside Resilience Plan' is designed to support the local population in the event of emergency situations, including loss of power and water supplies, phone and internet connection. Both are bright, with good lighting and polished, wooden floors which are cleaned regularly. Heating is from background night store heaters with the option of **The Main Hall** can comfortably seat up to 45 people conference style and 35 using tables. A digital projector and screens are available for use. **The Kitchen** can also accommodate gatherings of up to 12 people and, in addition, provides very good catering facilities including sinks, cooker, fridge, generous work surfaces and a good selection of crockery, cutlery and utensils. **Toilets:** There are separate male and female toilets. One toilet has disabled access and a shower facility. **Overnight Accommodation:** The building can accommodate around 16 – 20 people for overnight accommodation stays. The **well-appointed kitchen** is a great space for sharing a meal together and the main hall has the additional attraction of an open fireplace. (See below for more details.) The building **can accommodate around 16-20 people**. If separate sleeping is required, e.g. for adults or male/female split, the smaller room with the fitted kitchen can sleep around eight. Sleeping arrangements are: **bring your own camp-beds** or **pop up tents** (no pegs) and **sleeping mats** – this is a popular option with Cubs/Brownies and other groups who need to provide separation between boys/girls and adults. There are separate male and female toilets and a **disabled shower**. The grassed garden can also be used for **a small number of tents**. We ask that all residential guests leave the hall as clean as they find it. All our cleaning is done by volunteers from the village as this enables us to run the hall cost effectively. *Please note the village is a very quiet place and we ask that groups do not make excessive noise outside, especially after 8pm. It is possible to be flexible with lay-outs and use of furniture. The kitchen can also be a second meeting room as well as a convivial place for refreshments. A projector and screens are available for use. There is plenty of parking. Facilities for meetings and for training courses with parking, two heated rooms, toilets, kitchen and areas to work outdoors. Popular for meetings and courses with up to 20 participants. Free parking at the Hall. A mile from Lakeside at the foot of Lake Windermere, this is an amazing place to run a course. There are plenty of tables and chairs. There are three toilets, one of which has wheel chair access. These Include tea and coffee making facilities, toilets and parking. A creche could be organised for younger guests while the ceremony takes place. The Village Hall has also proved popular for post ceremony gatherings. Why not serve champagne and strawberries while the wedding photos are being taken? Or serve a buffet after a christening or a funeral? The Village Hall is a very cost effective option for meetings and training events. There is lots of space, seating, parking and a large kitchen. There is wheel chair access via the rear door from the car park. The building was the village school. The main room can accommodate 50 people in lecture style seating or 40 at tables. The smaller room can seat about 10-12 around a meeting table. There are plenty of tables and padded chairs and a screen for slides or power point. There are night storage heaters with extra metered heaters and a guarded open fire in the main room. In good weather, the yard and garden offer additional space for activities. There are lots of social events taking place throughout the year to bring the community together. Keep Fit on Mondays, Book Swap once a month on Wednesdays and the New Ventures activity group once a month on a Tuesday. See the Community Event calendar below. Lake Windermere, the Windermere Lake Cruises Pier and the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway are all a few minutes walk away. Finsthwaite is five minutes drive from the A591 and the A592, the main access routes to the South Lakes area. There is no village shop, but fuel and groceries etc. can be obtained from the Newby Bridge Garage (2 miles). Supermarkets can be found in Ulverston, Grange-over-Sands, Windermere and Kendal. There are excellent walks in the immediate area and details of a number of these can be found in the village hall. Also within easy reach of the village are the attractions listed below: There are great walks in all directions both on the fells and around the shore of Morecambe Bay. St Peter’s Church. One of the graves in the churchyard belongs to ['the Finsthwaite Princess'](https://www.theguardian.com/comment/story/0,3604,359992,00.html), Clementina Johannes Sobieski [Douglas](http://www.douglashistory.co.uk/history/clementina_douglas.htm#:~:text=Variously%20called%20the%20“Cumbrian%20Princess,his%20mistress%2C%20Clementina%20Maria%20Sophia) of Waterside, who was buried on 16th May 1771. It is widely believed she was the daughter of Prince Charles Edward, the Young Pretender (Bonnie Prince Charlie), by Clementina Walkinshaw. A 10 minute walk down the village lane takes you to the English Heritage [Stott Park Bobbin Mill](http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/stott-park-bobbin-mill/) which offers discounts for groups, check website for opening times and events. Just 20-30 mins walk through the woods take you to this hidden gem, with all the charm of the more famous Tarn Hows. This will take you in a few hours all the way to the Windermere car ferry or even to Ambleside for the very keen. For a shorter walk (15-20 mins) you can take the footpath behind the church over to Lakeside where you can get on the Lakeside Steam Railway or visit the Aquarium or have a drink in the conservatory of the Lakeside Hotel. Why not take a trip on one of the traditional Windermere Steamers to Bowness or the passenger ferry across to the National Trust waterside park of Fell Foot, which is great for swimming and where there are rowing boats for hire, and other seasonal activities? Take a boat from Lakeside to Bowness, Ambleside or Brockhole the National Park Visitors' Centre where there is much to do including Tree Top Trek and the Nets (booking advised), boats and bikes for hire, an orienteering course, an adventure playground and cafe. Grizedale Forest just 20 mins drive away is well known for it’s mountain bike trails and walks for all abilities. Popular walks nearby include Gummers How, Tarn Hows, Claife Heights, Latterbarrow, Humphrey Head and the Grizedale Sculpture trail. Tourist Attractions - all within 20 -30 mins drive - include: Several National Trust properties including Beatrix Potter’s home at Sawrey, Fell Foot and Wray Castle. Also worth a visit are Brantwood and Blackwell, and check out the programme at the Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal and Zeffirelli’s Cinema in Ambleside. Hotel Spa, Gym and Swimming Pool. It also guides action in situations such as flooding and snow/ice etc. The plan is lodged centrally with [**Support Cumbria**](https://supportcumbria.org.uk/) in order that it can be accessed by emergency and other support services when necessary. St Peter’s Church was built in 1874. It was designed by Paley and Austin and won a prize in a competition to design a church suitable for an alpine area and is graded as a 2\* building. It is beautifully decorated inside and well worth looking at. A set of ten tubular bells is housed in the tower and these were restored and electrified in 2011. We believe they are currently the only set of such bells working in the Carlisle Diocese. Ensuring we always have sufficient funds in the budget to pay our annual running costs (c.£3000) is a key concern as we are a small community and there is no guaranteed income stream. In order to build in some security, the hall committee launched the Hall’s Angels scheme, inviting local people, second-home owners and local businesses to support us by agreeing to donate either a regular or a one-off amount to the Village Hall. The scheme has been running for six years now and has been a lifeline. We are most grateful to all who have participated. Their generous contributions have enabled the Trustees to focus more time and energy on developing and maintaining the hall for the future. We would welcome new members to the scheme. It is run by a volunteer committee. All prices assume that the user groups will leave the building as they find it. Electricity for lighting, cooking and night store heating is included. Additional heating is paid for via meters. A 20% deposit is required for overnight and wedding bookings, with the balance due 4 weeks before the date(s) booked. 14 days' notice of cancellation is required in order for the hire charges paid Hall opened for guests to use the cloakroom and the car park -
